About

CONTEXT

Thousands of refugees and refugee claimants arrive every year in Canada. These people often present with medical conditions that are not commonly encountered by Canadian physicians.

Moreover, education about refugee health in Canadian medical schools and residency programs is very limited. Our hope is that Refugee Care will allow physicians (and other healthcare practitioners) who might not have a lot of refugee health experience to quickly access condensed clinical recommendations for their refugee patients.

CONTENT

The clinical information contained in this application is a consensus from the physician group working at the Calgary Refugee Health Society, and is based on years of experience treating most of the refugees and refugee claimants in Calgary. It is meant to be used as a clinical resource to guide Canadian physicians through the initial screening and management of newly arrived refugees and refugee claimants.

While these recommendations apply mainly to refugee patients, they could also be useful for physicians seeing newly arrived immigrants.

Refugee Care is divided into 4 main sections:

  • First Visit

Key information to guide physicians during the initial appointment with a refugee patient.

  • Screening Results

Laboratory findings on the initial screening tests and their respective management.

  • Common Issues

Other medical conditions commonly encountered in refugee patients.

  • Tools

Distribution/prevalence maps, tables/algorithms, links to other clinical resources, and a map of refugee clinics in Canada.

The medical content of this application was last updated in August 2022.
